Atlantis McGowen, MS (WA PI 2500039) started her career in military law enforcement, then continued on to become a Medicolegal Death Investigator (MDI) in Colorado. With over 10 years of hands-on, direct field experience, Investigator McGowen sharpened her skills and honed her expertise in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, forensic analysis, and interviewing.
Investigator McGowen started her service in the United States Air Force (USAF) and worked in security operations. She was deployed to Kuwait for eight months in 2018, and after operational success in various security roles, including patrol and dispatch, she was awarded Airman of the Year (2019). Following this, she was appointed as the Unit Trainer and Use of Force Director and the base Confinement Officer where she served.
Her work included the direct management and training of over 300 active duty personnel, conducting base-wide training out of three military installations. Investigator McGowen was the sole Confinement Officer responsible for evidence collection, processing, and prisoner transport while conducting USAF security operations.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the USAF in 2020, Investigator McGowen was selected to work as an MDI and Deputy Coroner at the Mesa County Coroner's Office in Grand Junction, CO. She worked independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team with the death investigations entrusted to her. During her tenure in Colorado, Investigator McGowen led the investigation of over 280 cases, including all manners of death, and assisted on at least 70 others.
Of these cases, she participated in every autopsy, and every death scene was treated as a prospective homicide. Developing this intricate approach equipped her with a sharp eye for detail and an understanding of the importance of ensuring all leads are carefully examined and followed through. With experience in handling complex and sensitive cases, she is known for uncovering critical information and providing clear and accurate technical analysis of evidence.
